In the Funky Jungle

I have had a go at making some PUL covers. FOE is tricky stuff, especially with the length I have actually being 3 bits taped together. Not very happy about that... Anyway here is one of the covers. This one I had to fiddle with because the FOE ran out while I was doing around the leg on one side. Very frustrating, was up till 1am!

Fluffy Bum & Flongies

I have found my hobby! I love making nappies & stuff. Here is my latest nappy. Its a pocket with Cuddle Fleece/polar outter & a microfleece inner. Its soooo soft.

I also had a attempt at some Flongies. Not very girly but I was just using up material before I tried it on better stuff. Not bad but I can see my mistakes. Note the little green triangles at the top, thats because the waiste wasn't wide enough. So I added little green flares at the cuffs of the legs to make it look like I meant to do it!

This makes me mad!

"Use my picture if it will help" said this mother. The children are twins, the bottle-fed child is a girl who died the day after this photograph was taken by UNICEF in Islamabad, Pakistan. Her brother was breastfed and thrived. The mother was incorrectly told she could not breastfeed both children. This horrific picture demonstrates the risk of artificial infant feeding, particularly where water supplies are unsafe. The expense of formula can lead to parents over-diluting it to make it last longer or using unsuitable milk powders or animal milks. In all countries breastfeeding provides immunity against infections. Despite these risks the baby food industry aggressively markets breastmilk substitutes encouraging mothers and health workers to favour artifical infant feeding over breastfeeding. Such tactics break marketing standards adopted by the World Health Assembly. Nestlé, the world's largest food company, is found to be responsible for more violations than any other company and is the target of an international boycott.
SCN News May 1991This picture tells two stories: most obviously, about the often fatal consequences of bottle-feeding; more profoundly, about the age-old bias in favour of the male. The child with the bottle is a girl - she died the next day. Her twin brother was breasfed. This woman was told by her mother-in-law that she didn't have enough milk for both her children, and so she should breastfeed the boy. But almost certainly she could have fed both her children herself, because the process of suckling induces the production of milk. However, even if she found that she could not produce sufficient milk - unlikly as that would be - a much better alternative to bottle-feeding would have been to find a wet-nurse. Ironically, this role has sometimes been taken by the grandmother. In most cultures, before the advent of bottle-feeding, wet-nursing was commomn practice. The Lesser ChildThe photograph on the cover is horrifying. Another baby girl dies unnecessarily. The department of child development, Government of India, with assistance from UNICEF, has produced a compelling account of the plight of the 'Lesser child'."In a culture that idolizes sons and dreads the birth of a daughter, to be born female comes perilously close of being born less than human. Today the rejection of the unwanted girl can begin even before her birth: prenatal sex determination tests followed by quick abortions eliminate thousands of female foetuses before they can become daughters. Those girls who manage to survive till birth and beyond find that the dice is heavily loaded against them in a world that denies them equal access to food, health, care, education, emmployment and simple human dignity."Born into indifference and reared on neglect, the girl child is caught in a web of cultural practices and prejudices that divest her of her individuality and mould her into a submissive self-sacrificing daughter and wife. Her labour ensures the survival and well-being of her family but robs her not only of her childhood but also of her right to be free of hunger, ignorance, disease and poverty.
A baby dies every 30 seconds from unsafe bottle feeding.
One and a half million babies die every year in poor countries because they are not breastfed.

Another thing made by me!

I started this trolly seat cover months ago. Gees, actually I was still pregnant! Its been somewhat finished for a while but needed some finishing touches. Here it is, not that the pictures show much I will have to take a photo of Isla in it, in a trolly.
I call it a trolly dolly, seems there are frilly bits of lace & ribbon she can play with...

Mothers Day

Happy Mothers day!
This year I woke to nothing :( Simon had forgot that today was mothers day. BUT I had already got my present early this week so I was ok about it. I got a new sewing machine. Actually I got a sewing machine for last mothers day too but it was a cheap one that really wasn't much chop so this year I got myself a good one. Its a Pfaff "Hobby" 1042. Its a basic machine but a bit more then your average "beginner" machine. Hopefully it will see me through for a while to come.

So anyway, I got up & nothing was said. So I thought I would grab the phone & ring my Mum. As soon as I said Happy Mothers day to her Simon looked at me & went "Awww yeah!" LOL. So once Glenn was awake they came out with the craft they had made at preschool. Very cute...

Our Pets

We have a Boxer named Zoe, she is as much a part of our family as our Cat Honey. Both are great family members who are great, no FANTASTIC with the children & each other.
Zoe is a white Boxer & she came into a family just before Evans 1st birthday. She was born on the 16th of June 2003. I was working at the North Richmond Vet surgery & we had a breeder come in with a litter of about 8 boxer pups. I have been a fan of boxers since working at the Kurnada Vet Surgery where we had Stewart the clinic dog, who was a Red Boxer. He was a great dog, sadily he passed away after making a piggy of himself in someones garbage. But thats sad & another post altogether..
Back to Zoe, when the breeder came in I asked how much her pups sell for. Her reply was because they are top show lines (father an italian champ & mother a canada champ, if I remember correctly...) that these pups would easily go for $900 a pup. My jaw hit the floor (I personally would never pay money like that for a dog). But the little white one she would probably let go for $100 as she is no good as a show or breeding dog because of her colour. I obvioulsy showed an interest as she then went on to say, Or free to a good home. I was sold & she came home that afternoon. Simon wasn't so sure, but Evans birthday was coming up & I said she was a present for Evan. She is now almost 4 years old & loves her toys. She is soooo good with the kids & the cat. Here she is with her newest toy, she got so excited over this one as it made the strangest noise. She even buried it in a box of potting mix!

Then we have Honey, the male black cat. He came into our family, along with is brother Tut in 2005. Sadily Tut was hit by a car & after having one of his front legs removed & the developing a very hard/expensive to treat problem we (and my we I mean I, as I was the only one who was sensible about it) decided to have him put to sleep. The medication needed to treat his condition was over $100 per bottle that would last about 4 weeks, plus he wasn't happy, you could tell he had had enough.

Honey is also a great pet, he is great with the kids, has never scratched or bitten them & he takes alot of crap from them, tail pulled, fists of fur yanked, squished, chased etc. he just takes it all in his stride. If he has had enough he just flops on the floor & puts up with them lying on him till he let him out side for a break. He loves to sleep with the boys & is often found snuggled up with them in the mornings. He has the biggest purr too!
Honey with the boys...
Tut, after his amputation but before he got really sick.

Happy 6 month birthday Isla!

Isla is 6 months old today. What a beautiful girl she is. Learning to crawl is coming along nicely. She has had a few tries at solids & while she is willing to try, she isn't really ready yet, she just spits it back out & blows respberries with it making a big mess.

Here she is wearing her baby leg warmers.
Here is a you tube of Isla & her crawling technique, its coming along nicely.

In the Jungle

Here is another nappy I have made. This one was inspired by one of the BB girls.
Glenn likes it!
